Just under 10 acres on a sandstone ridge in the Free State of Winston, planted with the grapes that actually want to grow here.
We established Mansell Hollow in 2022, our family land where we planted the vines in 2026, on ground too hot and humid for the classics and found that muscadine, the vine that has grown wild in these woods for centuries, makes something honest when you stop apologizing for it.
We have small blocks of 1-2 acres each planted. For the country wine, whatever the holler wants to give us in a given year goes into the bottle, and what it doesn't give, we don't fake.
I really couldn't think of a name for the project and one April evening after a close friend passing, a cardinal came and perched to talk to me as they do. Each morning, the rabbits would be my only workmates until Dad would come up to help too. So, that's where the name was born.
Dark plum and pine rosin, off-dry with a hint of muscadine aromas to finish. The red that grows where vinifera won't.
Bronze, semi-sweet with faint floral and honeysuckle. Drink it cold, on the porch, on a hot summer day, and savor that straight from the vine flavor.
Ink-black and smooth; the classic settler wine; one native parent, one old world parent.
Wild blackberry in summer, persimmon after frost. Whatever the holler gives us.
Thin, fast-draining, sitting on sandstone shelf. It stresses the vine just enough to build sugar and refuses to hold the rot that humidity invites.
Muscadines and the Black Spanish grapes (vinifera) want room and air. We give it eight to twelve feet of it between plants, canopy open to the ridge wind, hand pest management and drip-fed water. No pesticides, ever.
Picked by hand in the cool hours, berry by berry as each block comes ripe. The country wines follow whatever the woods hand over after.
Winston County is dry (for now). We offer vineyard tours only, no tasting room pours on site. Come walk the rows, see the cellar, and hear how the wines are made.
